Besides employees and business partners, those other professionals on your team can make a huge difference in your business. Every business is different, so this article is limited to those professionals that can be useful in most every business. If it doesn’t apply to you, it wouldn’t make sense to have them on your team.
Lawyers
Being a lawyer, I obviously have to start with lawyers. We can help you set up your business, get your standard contracts in order, help with leases, get you through licensing and permitting, and much more. It all depends on what areas you need and, more importantly, what areas you want to invest in.
I work with mostly very small companies, so I understand prioritizing your dollars better than most. I strongly encourage you putting money towards the things that bring you the most risk. There’s no absolute rule on which items are most important to you or what areas you can easily DIY. When in doubt, find a lawyer with an affordable consultation fee and talk through which items to prioritize.
Of course, I offer this service, and I have to occasionally put in a little self promotion. Click this link to schedule a 30 minute phone or zoom consultation.
Accountant/Tax Professional
Next, we have your accountant and/or tax professional. These can be different people, or you can use just one. Personally, I hate doing my own taxes. It’s worth it to me to hire that out even though I know how to do them. For most of my clients, this is an area they would never want to touch. Doing your taxes wrong can lead to serious penalties! It’s best to avoid that.
Marketing
If you’re not sure of your marketing skills, and your business needs marketing to grow or survive, you need a marketing professional. Sure, a business owner can get really good at one or two marketing approaches that work for your business. I definitely support doing that! However, a marketing professional will look at all the different options and be able to craft a strong strategy for your business.
Because there are so many changes and different ways to market your business, the value in a marketing professional is the knowledge, experience, and time they commit to keeping up with that field.
Administrative
There’s always administrative stuff that comes up. You can do what I did for years and take care of all of it yourself at night. Or, you could hire a virtual assistant to take as much of that work off your plate as possible.
Others On Your Team
I strive to include the absolute essentials for people you need on your team. There’s probably a lot you think I should include. Feel free to let me know in the comments below!
